Justin Bieber for PETA

No, I don’t have ‘Bieber fever’, I do however think it’s very cool that this young star has taken the time to educate himself, and now others, about animal cruelty issues.

In Bieber’s new PETA campaign he’s asking us to adopt animals from shelters rather than go to pet stores or breeders. He also goes a step further and asks that we then spay or neuter our adopted animals to help control the animal population.

Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 420,000 kittens!

Every year, 6 to 8 million abandoned or stray dogs and cats enter animal shelters—and half of them must be euthanized because of a lack of good homes.

Buying animals from pet stores and breeders perpetuates and supports cruelty to animals because MANY breeders (who then supple to pet stores) keep the animals in cramped, dirty, unhealthy conditions. Babies are taken away from their mothers far too young and disease is rampant.

Puppies who are shipped from mill to broker to pet store can travel hundreds of miles in pickup trucks, tractor trailers, and/or airplanes, often without adequate food, water, ventilation, or shelter.

In Tennessee, 150 overheated puppies, who were traveling from a Missouri puppy mill to pet stores on the East Coast, were found in a cargo truck without air conditioning; four died.

Please help stop this crisis by telling your friends and family who are thinking about getting an animal to adopt one of the many millions of loving animals at a local shelter.

The Humane Society and PAWS are two great places to start.
