Community Garden Time!

It has finally stopped raining long enough to start our plot at the community garden!

It wasn’t easy, but we did it!

This is the first year this particular piece of land is being used for a garden so there were plenty of stubborn weeds to deal with.

The plot was tilled, but no we either had to pick the weeds out of the wet heavy dirt, or we could lay a weed tarp over the compost and poke holes before we planted, or we could lay newspaper down and put the compost on top. We opted for option number 3.

First we put the paper down in small segments while we put the compost on top. Henry was a great helper with that!

It took a lot of trips with the wheelbarrow…..

It got heavy, so Dad had to step in as well.

After a few hours of serious work and major sweating (it was almost 90 degrees) we were finished!

We planted sweet potatoes (from our potato project), spinach, corn, lima beans, green beans, eggplant, bell peppers and tomatoes, all organic of course.

The kids were so proud of themselves, and so was I. I can’t wait until we can start picking it all and making great new recipes!
