Milk Shake? No- Maca Shake!

I recently went to see raw food and longevity guru David Wolfe speak at a weekend long conference. I’ll give a more detailed post in the near future, but for now I just wanted to share one of the super-foods he recommended, Maca.

With all of the toxins in the air we breath, pesticides on the grass we walk on, the plastics we come in contact with (even when we are really careful it’s almost impossible to avoid them all together).  Sadly, even if we vow to not eat out of plastic containers, and eat all organic foods, we are still bombarded with toxins that are slowly killing us. Food has to not only be healthy, it needs to be healing.

Maca is a Peruvian root vegetable known to build immunity, stamina, sexual health and more. It contains 60-75% carbohydrates, 10-14% protein, 8.5% fiber, and 2.2% lipids. It also has essential amino acids, calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron.

It has a nutty taste that makes it perfect for smoothies and shakes. I now add 2 tablespoons to my usual smoothie recipe (meant for 2-3 people). At the David Wolfe Raw conference, sponsored by Regeneration Raw, they were making some amazing Maca shakes. I tried to recreate it the best I could and I think it’s pretty darn good!

The shake has other super-foods like cacao, reishi mushrooms and raw honey. I will get into more detail about each of those in future posts. For now let me just say a few things. First, I know honey is not technically vegan and I was off of it for a long time, but I do think it’s a highly madicinal food that for now, I am eating. I buy raw, organic honey from a local farm. If you buy from larger brands, many are imported from China, and many of the bees have been kept contained, fed high fructose corn syrup, sprayed with nicotine, and antibiotics. For those of you who have kids I highly recommend Jerry Seinfeld’s animated film Bees. It’s an educational and fun look into the lives of Bees and what can go wrong.

I would also like to take a second to say that you absolutely will not taste the reishi mushrooms, but they are highly madicinal, and worth bringing into your daily routine. Cacao is also a super-food, and insanely high in iron. Two tablespoons have 45% of the daily recommended intake.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup hemp milk

2 cups of ice

2 tablespoons raw organic maca powder

2 tablespoons raw organic honey

1 tablespoon cacao

3 teaspoons reishi mushroom powder

Blend all the ingredients in a blender (preferably a vitamix -well worth the investment), and drink! You want it to be the consistency of a milk shake, so add more ice if you need it; more maca for a nuttier flavor, or more honey for more sweetness.
