Social Sundays

Creating awareness in our children about social issues and their ability to effect change is easier than one may think.

Like anything else, we just need to make it one of our priorities.

I don’t know what works for you, but I have to schedule everything. If it’s not on the schedule, it doesn’t happen.

In our house, we call it ‘Social Sundays.’

We do one thing every Sunday that gives back to the world.

This may sound time consuming, but it usually takes five minutes.

The kids are little so it usually consists of Noah sitting on my lap while we go to one of our favorite organizations websites (listed on my ‘Take Action’ page), and we sign a petition for a cause we believe in, or sign a letter to our Senator.

I explain to him what the organization is about, and what we are hoping to accomplish by signing that particular letter or petition.

As they get older we will volunteer, or write the letters ourselves.

The possibilities are endless of what you can do.

Weekends are hectic for everyone, but we all have 5 minutes to spare.

The point is, just do something. Make it fun, and before you know it they will be asking you to do more!
